oneworld's award-winning travel and charging stations land at Mexico City to highlight Mexicana's addition to the alliance

09 novembre 2009

oneworld® is bringing its award-winning, hi-tech Travel Stations and Charging Stations to Mexico City to highlight tonight's addition of Mexicana to the world's leading quality airline alliance.

It will be the first time either of the units will have appeared anywhere in Latin America.

oneworld Travel Stations are highly engaging, interactive installations featuring interactive, touch-screen technology similar to the Apple iPhone.

They offer travellers guides, tips and advice, provided by Lonely Planet, the leading travel information group, on some of the world's leading destinations in a unique and innovative format - all for free.

Travellers can use them before boarding a flight to access data - text and pictures - and then download useful information, including language guides and audio casts, to their own smartphones, laptops or other devices.

With tips and advice in English and Spanish on where to sleep, what to eat, where to relax, what to see and how to do business, the Travel Stations offer an insider's view around 30 of the world's most popular destinations - all of which can be reached by flying oneworld member airlines.  Information about the alliance, its airlines and their services is also included in the Travel Stations' databanks.

They have won a number of awards for innovation.

One of the travel stations is now live in Mexicana's domestic check-in area at Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport.

oneworld's Charging Stations are an answer to a prayer for travellers whose mobile phones, laptop computers or music players have run out of power.  These freestanding units are equipped with a range of international electricity sockets enabling travellers to plug in their laptops, mobile phones, PDAs and other similar devices for a power top-up - again, all for free.

Two of the units are now live in MexicanaElite lounges at Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport - one in its domestic lounge and one in its international lounge.

Notes to editors:

oneworld Commercial Director Filip Lemmens said: "oneworld Travel and Charging Stations are aimed at building awareness of oneworld in a novel, interactive and interesting way.  Their attractive and interactive design and the fantastic information provided by Lonely Planet reflect oneworld key virtues - the world-class quality of our airlines, the breadth of their networks and our determination to provide customers with great value and service, at the cutting edge of innovation.

"Their arrival at the home hub of our new recruit Mexicana is a great way for us to highlight that this high quality and innovative airline will be part of our alliance from 10 November."

About oneworld

oneworld brings together some of the best and biggest names in the airline business - American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LAN, Malév Hungarian Airlines, Qantas and Royal Jordanian, and around 20 affiliates including American Eagle, Dragonair, LAN Argentina, LAN Ecuador and LAN Peru.  Mexicana and its affiliates MexicanaClick and MexicanaLink will join the alliance on 10 novembre 2009 and Russia's S7 Airlines in 2010.

Between them, these airlines:

  • Serve almost 750 airports in nearly 150 countries, with some 8 500 daily departures.
  • Offer nearly 550 airport lounges for premium customers.
  • Carry some 330 million passengers a year.
  • Employ 300 000 people.
  • Operate almost 2 500 aircraft.
  • Generate some US$100 billion annual revenues in total.

It is the only alliance with any airlines based in Australia, South America or Asia's Middle East.

The alliance enables its members to offer their customers more services and benefits than any airline can provide on its own.  These include a broader route network, opportunities to earn and redeem frequent flyer miles and points across the combined oneworld network and more airport lounges.   oneworld also offers more alliance fares than any of its competitors.

oneworld was voted the World's Leading Airline Alliance for the seventh year running in the latest (2009) World Travel Awards.   It is the only winner of this award since it was introduced in 2003.
